Weekly post # 13: Mariko Mori

The artist Mariko Mori places herself as the central character in her photographic parody. Despite her self-portrait photograph parody's, Mori's art is based on deeply held Japanese spiritual symbolism. At the core of her art is the idea of oneness, that is bringing in the outsider. She often uses another Japanese cultural icon anime as a vehicle for bringing desperate realities together. Mori's anime characters (cosplay) become metaphors for critiquing Japanese society (with Humor) and the many ways it copes with contemporary themes like technology, and fantasy, which often collides with traditional Japanese cultural ideas. Mori's art is considered contemporary feminist art.

Mori's "Birth of a star" parodies one of her recurring themes Japanese pop culture. Everything is plastic, her dress, her headphones, even the balls that seem to float randomly in the photo.
