Week # 4 Marcel Dzama's

Marcel Dzama is a provocative artist that works for the New York City Ballet. Even though He had never worked as a costume designer, the New York City Ballet Company was so impressed with his deigns that they hired him to design all there ballet costumes. As a designer, Dzama works closely with the choreographer to ensure that his designs corresponds with the choreographer's vision. Dzama states the designs that he enjoys creating the most in his sketch books are costumed themed. One of his favorite costume themes is to have the characters dressed in animal costumes. Dzama's inspiration for these costumes seems to harken back to the childhood movies of the last century. He keeps a catalogue of all his many ideas in little black sketch books.

Marcel Dzama appears to access to an unlimited amount of ideas. In fact he worries that he might not have enough time to illustrate them all. When he does create art, He tries not to censor himself. This means that some people would find Dzama's art questionable. However, he has created sculptures specifically for the New York Ballet are called Needleman, which were not controversial. Of Dzama's many design directions He has created ceramic chess pieces.

An image that I feel best illustrates his artistic and theatrical sensibilities is titled The Carnival Blues. Dzama's palette of vibrant, cool blue color reminds me of a carnival from the Renaissance. I have included a thumbnail image below for your enjoyment.
