Weekly post # 12: Martina Lopez

Artist Martina Lopez integrates photographic images into a synthetic scene of her creation seeking to give eternal life to memories. Her photographic collages routinely pay homage to the memories of her father and brother. The manipulation of the familiar images along with found images of different contexts add a narrative to Lopez's art work. Manipulation and assemblage facilitate her ability to control the outcome of a depicted scene in such a way that a painful memory becomes a positive memory that never changes due to life's uncertainties. All of her photographic assemblages contain autobiographical metaphors that serve Lopez as constant reminders of her most cherished memories.

"Gifts of life" encapsulates this philosophy with the depiction of her mother and Lopez as a child in the safe embrace that defies age and death. Birds soar in a positive sign of life.
